Microsoft Dynamics AX Exploring Quality Orders (Part 1) – Test Instruments

This blog series will encompass three parts: Test Instruments (Part 1), Quantitative Tests (Part 2), and Quality Orders (Part 3).

Whether its food, clothing or an airplane part, a customer in any industry wants the best quality product they can find. Microsoft Dynamics AX has a tool that can help ensure the highest quality is going to your customer by performing and tracking Quality Orders. The same solution is applicable for the inspection of purchased items or any sub-components built internally.

Quality Orders are performed on inventory items and track detailed information about the performance of the test including measurements, lot or batch numbers, quantity, results and more. Today we will talk about a key mechanism to prepare prior to using quality orders is the test instrument setup. While this feature is optional, establishing consistency of instruments and linking them to specific items for testing will assist in enhancing product quality.

Creating Test Instruments To get started, navigate to Information Management -> Area page -> Setup -> Quality Control-> Test Instruments

  • To create a new instrument, select New in the Menu Bar and a new record will appear

  • Enter the name of your Test Instrument

  • Select your Test Area. This is a drop down menu – if new areas are required, you can configure these in the Store Areas Form.

  • Enter a Description; what the test instrument is used for.

  • Select a Unit. This is a drop down menu – if new areas are required, you can configure these in the Units Form.

  • The Unit captures information as to how you should record data using this unit

  • The Precision field will auto-populate based on the setup of the Unit selected.

  • When a Quality Order is created, a Test Instrument can be selected or will default into the order based on your setup.
